A dosha is one of the three types/energies in Ayurveda that determine a person's physical and mental characteristics. Each individual has a unique combination of these doshas, which influences their constitution and health. The term dosha comes from Sanskrit and means "that which changes." According to Ayurveda, all individuals are born with a specific combination of the three doshas, which together form their constitution or "Prakriti." These doshas are Vata, Pitta, and Kapha, derived from the five elements: earth, water, fire, air, and ether. Each dosha has particular qualities that influence how your body functions, how you think and feel, and how you respond to stress.

Throughout your life, the balance between these doshas can shift due to factors such as diet, stress, climate, age, and lifestyle. These changes can lead to physical and emotional issues, such as fatigue, stress, or digestive problems. Through this dosha test I gain insight into which doshas are dominant and where there may be imbalances before a massage treatment. Based on the results, I can fully tailor your treatment to what your body needs.

The three doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha

Vata Dosha: Air and Ether

Vata represents movement and is connected to the elements of air and ether. This dosha governs all movements in the body, such as breathing, blood circulation, nerve impulses, and the digestive system.

 Characteristics of Vata:

  • Physical: People with a dominant Vata dosha are often slender, have a light build, and may struggle with weight gain. They tend to move quickly and are often energetic, but their energy can deplete quickly.
  • Mental: Vata types are creative, quick to understand, and have an active mind. They often excel at multitasking but can also become easily distracted and may struggle with overthinking or anxiety.
  • Emotional: Vatas can be very sensitive to stress and unrest. When Vata is out of balance, they may feel anxious, restless, and overwhelmed.

How to bring Vata into balance:

A massage for Vata focuses on creating calm and warmth through slow, gentle, and rhythmic movements. Warm, nourishing oils, such as sesame oil, are used to counteract Vata's natural dryness. The gentle pressure helps soothe the nervous system and brings a sense of peace and stability.

Pitta Dosha: Fire and Water

Pitta represents transformation and is associated with the elements of fire and water. This dosha governs metabolism, digestion, and hormonal balance.

Characteristics of Pitta:

  • Physical: People with a dominant Pitta dosha often have an average build and good digestion. They tend to be warm-blooded and may have a reddish complexion. Pitta types have a strong appetite and can become easily irritated when they are hungry.
  • Mental: Pitta types are sharp-minded, goal-oriented, and often possess natural leadership qualities. They value structure and efficiency and tend to be perfectionistic.
  • Emotional: When Pitta is out of balance, they can become easily angry, irritable, or experience feelings of frustration and irritability.

How to bring Vata into balance?

Treatments for Pitta focus on cooling and relaxation. Cooling oils, such as coconut oil or almond oil, are used, and the massage is firm but not too intense. Soothing the head and chest area is important, as Pitta types often experience overheating in these regions. This includes gentle and rhythmic movements that temper the fire of Pitta.

Kapha Dosha: Earth and Water

Kapha represents stability and is connected to the elements of earth and water. This dosha governs body structure, joints, muscles, and the immune system. Kaphas are known for their strength and endurance.

 Characteristics of Kapha:

  • Physical: People with a dominant Kapha dosha often have a solid build and may find it easier to retain weight. They have a slow metabolism and often feel energetic and strong.
  • Mental: Kapha types are calm, reliable, and patient. They enjoy routines and stability but can also be slow in making decisions or initiating new projects.
  • Emotional: When Kapha is out of balance, they may become lazy, sluggish, and apathetic. They can cling to emotions or experiences and struggle to let go.

How to bring Kapha into balance?

A treatment for Kapha focuses on stimulation and encouraging movement. It employs firm and dynamic massage techniques, often with less oil. The massage typically begins at the feet and works its way up to promote energy flow throughout the body. This helps reduce sluggishness and re-motivates and activates Kaphas.
